We've all got to pay those wedding-bell dues |
|
Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards.
-- Benjamin Franklin
This promises to be the year of romance for my family. In the next 12 months, a son is marrying, as are the two eldest children of my late sister. My neighbor's two daughters, whom I watched grow up, are also walking down the aisle. |

The Top Ten Do's and Dont's for Men on Valentine's Day |
|
Sometimes women accuse men of being clueless about Valentine's Day. And my wife certainly has more reason than most to think that! After all, I did give her the proverbial toaster one year for Valentine's Day. But I did learn my lesson and since then, I have tried to be a lot more focused on her needs and wishes than our needs and wishes, however practical they may be. And more often than not, we are. Here are the top ten things to do and the top ten things to avoid doing on Valentine's Day to help our significant others know we care about them.

John Edwards and Little Quinn |
|
The news of late has been full of more details on the affair of former Presidential candidate John Edwards with campaign worker Rielle Hunter. Edwards has admitted to fathering the child, after months of denial. Edwards and his wife Elizabeth are separated. And former campaign aide Andrew Young has published his new book The Politician including many of the salacious details.
What always seems to me to be lost here is the impact on Edward's daughter Quinn. It is amazing to me to have a father who, despite the political costs, denied the girl was his and even directed Young, who is also married, to lie to the world and to his wife that he was indeed the father.
Now that Edwards has come clean and the story is out, it seems the only right thing to do is to truly embrace Quinn as his daughter, get his act together and become a legitimate role model in her life. Fulfilling fatherhood responsibilities, financially, emotionally and otherwise, is the right next step for John Edwards.

Leaving your job? Don't forget your 401(k) |
|
Question: I'm in my 30's and have a 401(k) from a previous job, 75% of which is invested in a variety of stock portfolios. Although my stock holdings have recovered a bit recently, I'm still down about ,000 from my peak balance. I'm planning to roll over this old 401(k) into either the 401(k) at my new job or into an IRA account, but I'm wondering whether I should do the rollover now while stocks are still cheap or wait until the market has recovered and then do it. What do think? --Todd Gerecke, Lynden, Washington
