Mr. Smiley testing my patience
Parenting, my husband tells anyone who will listen, is the last stand of the amateur. This rings particularly true when children pass through the fun house known as adolescence. No matter how patient or strict or understanding parents try to be, the teenage years test our mettle and our sanity. We're suddenly stupid beyond our years, an embarrassment to the family.
Here's an entertaining deal
When I lived in Los Angeles, one of my favorite deals was ''public rush,'' when all the remaining tickets to theatrical performances were sold 10 minutes before showtime for $10 or $15. Since my days off were Tuesday and Wednesday, I almost always could see the top shows on the cheap.

Q: I see people all the time who insist on driving their cars with their dogs in their laps. Can you please let pet owners know that this is not safe for the dogs, them or anyone out on the roads with them?

DVDs don't help babies, new study confirms
For those parents out there who were holding out hope that scientists would someday vindicate Baby Einstein DVDs and other so-called educational videos aimed at the under-2 set, a leading pediatric journal has some bad news: The DVDs do not help 1-year-olds learn words emphasized during the programs.

Feel free to ask Morinikke Williams a question about her hijab. She's heard them all. The most frequent: ''Why do you wear that?'' Also high on the list: ''Isn't it hot under there?''

Eric Holder Speaks on Fatherhood

US Attorney General Eric Holder spoke last week at a meeting in Washington DC about fatherhood.  His forum was the Alliance of Concerned Men, an organization working on addressing problems facing young black men.  Here are a couple of the Attorney General's comments about fathers: "I have held many titles in my life, but the title that I am most proud of is father. A father's role in the life of a child is irreplaceable." "We as men need to spend more time with our sons and daughters. We need to teach our sons to have respect for women and daughters to demand respect for themselves." Read more about Holder's comments in this article from the Washington Informer, or you can find the full text of his speech at the Attorney General's website. Photo courtesy of Getty Images News. Job Shadow Day at JFK - OK or Not?

I have been reading with great interest the articles in the news the last few days about the air traffic controller father who took his twins to work (not at the same time) and allowed the ten year old son to radio instructions to pilots at JFK Airport in New York.  You can read the CNN story or watch the YouTube video of a news report on the incident to learn more. Now, the father and his supervisor have been suspended and the facilities manager wrote a pretty direct memo about the incident. "The display of professionalism in the past by the control personnel at this facility has been exemplary," the memo said. "However, a lapse in judgment for what may seem a minor transgression diminishes our credibility and slights the high standards of professionalism." To me, this situation would have been different had the controller father left his children unsupervised in the tower talking to pilots.  But that was not the case.  He was telling the son exactly what to say and was in my mind simply enjoying an opportunity to help his son better understand what dad does at work all day and have a bonding moment.  No harm, no foul in my mind. Then again, I am not a pilot and maybe hearing that child's voice would unnerve me.  But in any case, I don't see the big deal.  Anyone disagree?  Let me know and why. Leaving your job? Don't forget your 401(k)

Question: I'm in my 30's and have a 401(k) from a previous job, 75% of which is invested in a variety of stock portfolios. Although my stock holdings have recovered a bit recently, I'm still down about ,000 from my peak balance. I'm planning to roll over this old 401(k) into either the 401(k) at my new job or into an IRA account, but I'm wondering whether I should do the rollover now while stocks are still cheap or wait until the market has recovered and then do it. What do think? --Todd Gerecke, Lynden, Washington

In 1986, before mandatory minimums for crack offenses became effective, the average federal drug offense sentence for blacks was 11% higher than for whites. Four years later following the implementation of harsher drug sentencing laws, the average federal drug offense sentence was 49% higher for blacks.

REV. TELL IT LIKE IT IS
Sisters......... don't call a good man a dead beat dad when he is financially supporting his children and wants to be an important part of their lives but the woman is making it hard for him because he no longer wants to be in a relationship with her........And Brothers.........don't give up on a relationship with your children just because the woman is making it hard for you to do so.......Your children are worth more than your child support!

THE KNOWLEDGE NUT
Did you know that........ no matter how ticklish you may be, you can't tickle yourself.................... This is because your brain keeps your senses focused on what's happening in the world; important signals aren't drowned out in the endless buzz of sensations caused by your actions. For instance, we are unaware of the feel of a chair and the texture of our socks, yet we immediately notice a tap on our shoulder.
